British youth culture and politics (1970-80th). Matthew Worley Ph.D. Matthew Worley is an author, researcher, Professor of Modern History at the University of Reading. He studies subcultures from a historical perspective. His research mainly touches the period of 1970-1980th with an interest in the relationship between politics and youth culture, particularly punks. In this interview, Dr. Worley shared his methods of studying subcultures, his experience, and the activity of the Interdisciplinary Network for the Study of Subcultures.
